1988: The Ultimate Warrior Vs The Honky Tonk Man
1988’s Summerslam pay per view was held in the legendary Madison Square Garden. The Honky Tonk Man, who had been the longest regaining WWF Intercontinental Champion, issued an open challenge. The challenge was answered by the rising star of the federation, The Ultimate Warrior. The Ultimate Warrior was victorious in only 30 seconds, to cement his status as one of the biggest fan favourites at that time.
1996: Boiler Room Brawl
In 1996, with the wrestling fans noticing a more hardcore style thanks to ECW, the WWF began to make changes in it’s product. A bitter and long lasting feud between Mankind and The Undertaker featured this Boiler Room Brawl match, where Paul Bearer turned on the Undertaker by striking him with his urn, aligning himself with Mankind.
2001: A new WCW Champion!
2001 saw the WWF purchase WCW and later the rights to ECW, setting up the poorly executed “Invasion” storyline. In this years Summerslam event, The Rock defeated Booker T with a Rock Bottom to win the WCW Championship.
1995: A Ladder Match To Remember
Fans attending in the Pittsburgh Civic Arena and those viewing at home will fondly remember a ladder match where Shawn Michaels defeated Razor Ramon to retain the WWF Intercontinental Championship. After two attempts which appeared to be botched my Shawn Michaels, he eventually grabbed and removed the title that was suspended from the rafters.
2003: Elimination Chamber
In the second ever elimination chamber match, Triple H competed against Goldberg, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, Kevin Nash and Shawn Michaels for the World Heavyweight Championship. In a match that arguably surpassed the previous Elimination Chamber battle, Triple H managed to retain his title after he struck Goldberg with his trademark Sledgehammer to retain the championship.
1998: DX Vs The Nation Of Domination
1998 is widley remembered for the war between DX and The Nation of Domination. The then two leaders of the entities Triple H and the Rock faced each other in a ladder match. In what was the best match of the evening, the pair proved that they had what it took to headline future pay per view events. On this occasion Triple H won by grabbing the belt after Chyna gave a low blow to The Rock.
2004: The Youngest World Heavyweight Champion is crowned
The 2004 Summerslam saw Randy Orton become the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE History when he defeated Chris Benoit following an RKO. Orton had surpassed Brock Lesnar’s record that he earned by defeating The Rock in 2002.
1992: British Bulldog wins the Intercontinental Championship
The 1992 Summerslam took place in Wembley Stadium, London, England, and marked the second largest live audience ever to attend a WWF/WWE event with 80,355 in attendance. The main event for that night was for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, where local favourite The Brittish Bulldog defeated Bret Hart via pinfall to win the title.
1991: The Match Made In Hell
The main event for the 1991 Summerslam pay per view was dubbed as “The Match Made In Hell”. A Handicap tag team match pitting Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior against Sgt. Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa and General Adnan, with Sid Justice as the special guest referee.
At the time, Sgt. Slaughter and his tag team partners received a lot of heat due to the war in Iraq, the team of Hogan and The Warrior were victorious after Hogan pinned Sgt. Slaughter following his famous leg drop.
2005: Legend Vs Icon
In one of the most memorable feuds in recent memory, two of the biggest fan favourites in the history of the industry Hulk Hogan squared of against Shawn Michaels. The immortal Hulk Hogan was victorious after using his Leg Drop. After the match, much to the delight of the fan’s, the pair shared a handshake as a sign of respect.
