Wigan have been busy in the transfer market this week, their most recognisable signing being Sweden left back Erik Edman from Rennes. Many fans will be familiar with him following his spell with Tottenham in 2004. As well as Edman, they have secured a permamnt deal for Ecuador international Antonio Valencia from Villarreal for an undisclosed fee and taken Honduras defender Maynor Figueroa on loan until the end of the season.
In the last round of the competition, Wigan collected a superb 3-0 victory over fellow Premier League strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light. The goals came from Scharner and Cotterill, Sunderland defender McShane added an own goal in between.
Chelsea will be in a confident mood after securing their place in the league cup final for the third time in four years after beating Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
In the last round of the cup, Chelsea beat Championship side Queens Park Rangers by a single goal in a 1-0 victory. The breakthrough arrived on 28 minutes when striker Claudio Pizzaro’s shot struck the post and rebounded of goalkeeper Lee Camp and into the back of the net.
