West Ham United could only manage a draw at home to 10 man Reading in their match on boxing day. They took the lead following the sending of Brynjar Gunnarsson for a two-footed lunge at Hayden Mullins. However the hammers couldn’t hold on and saw Reading’s Dave Kitson level the score.
Manchester United swept aside Sunderland with ease to end the day top of the Premier League after Arsenal’s evening draw at Portsmouth.
Wayne Rooney opened the scoring on 20 minutes and later set up Louis Saha to volley a second goal. Cristiano Ronaldo curled in a free-kick before Saha rounded things off with late penalty.
West Ham will be confident going into this match, having beaten Manchester United twice last season under Alan Curbishley.
Carlos Tevez will be facing his former club for the first time since joining Man United in the summer, he will be looking to add to his goal scoring tally this season.
