In one of the main bouts of the evening, UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn defends his title against former champion Sean Sherk.
BJ Penn won the title at UFC 80: Rapid Fire when he made Joe Stevenson tap out. It should be noted that Sean Sherk in fact won the title at UFC 64 and held the title until December 2007, but was stripped of the title for testing positive for steroid usage.
Also on the fight card, fan favourite Tito Otiz faces Lyoto Machida. In 2006 Ortiz enjoyed victories over UFC legend Ken Shamrock, but was beaten by fellow fan favourite Chuck Liddell later that year. In Ortiz’s only UFC bout of 2007, he drew with Rashad Evans.
Since debuting in UFC in Febuary 2007, Lyoto Machida has been impressive, recording four victories, including over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in his last bout.
The other bout of major note sees Wanderlei Silva take on Keith Jardine. Silva has lost this last three UFC fights where Jardine collected a victory over Chuck Liddell last September.
