Stephen Hunt’s controversial injury-time goal denied Sunderland a point at the Madejski stadium. Hunt’s shot was clawed away by stopper Craig Gordon but the officials ruled the ball had crossed the line.
Manager Roy Keane wasn’t happy, but Sunderland could have gone in front before the winning goal, when Kenwyne Jones broke through but opted to shoot instead of passing to fellow striker Chopra, who was unmarked in the six yard box. Jones’ shot was blocked by keeper Hahnemann.
At home, Sunderland have collected four points in their last two games, a 1-0 victory over Derby and a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.
In their last game, Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty two minutes from time earned Manchester United a narrow 2-1 win against Everton.
Keeper Edwin Van Der Sar will again miss the match with injury, reserve stopper Tomas Kuszczak will again start the match. Defender Rio Ferdinand may be back in the squad, as could midifeler Owen Hargreaves.
United will want to be more clinical in front of goal, especially away from home. Both Tevez and Rooney have been guilty of squandering good opportunities to get on the goal scoring sheet. Striker Louis Saha may have a big role to play over the festive period.
