Newbridge born Gavin Rees defends his WBA world light-welterweight title for the first time at the Cardiff International Arena against Ukraine’s Andreas Kotelnik.
Rees became the WBA super-lightweight World Champion after upsetting the odds to defeat Souleymane Mbaye in an upset decision win in Cardiff Last July.
Gavin Rees has a superb record so far, winning all twenty seven of his bouts, thirteen of those by knockout. Gavin, who’s dubbed “The Rock” is trained by Enzo Calzaghe, who is o fcourse the father of Joe Calzaghe.
Unlike many boxers on the circuit, Andriy Kotelnyk boasts a solid Amateur record, having won a Silver Medal as a Lightweight at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Andreas Kotelnik turned pro in 2000 and won his first 23 fights before losing to Souleymane M’baye in 2004, who Gavin Rees defeated to win the belt.
Overall Kotelnik has fought thirty one times, winning twenty eight of those fights, twelve of which by knockout. The Ukrainian has lost twice and drawn once.
Gavin Rees is the favourite for the fight and with the home advantage being prominent, it could be a great night for British Boxing.
