Chelsea go into this match in fourth place in the league, five points behind leaders Arsenal who have a game in hand to play over the blues.
In their last Premiership fixture, they recorded a comfortable 2-0 Victory at Derby County thanks to goals from striker Salomon Kalou and winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.
They will be without battling midfield dynamo Michael Essien who was sent off against Derby in stoppage time. Without Essien in the starting line up, Joe Cole is likely to return to the first team after being an un-used substitute in the last fixture.
Michael Ballack is unlikely to feature although he did return to footballing action following seven months out in a reserve team match on Monday.
Didier Drogba has recovered from the injury he suffered whilst on international duty and will spearhead the attack.
After a slow start to the season West Ham have began to play better as a team and have climbed up to 10th place in the table.
In their last match, they earned a point at home to near rivals Tottenham Hotspur. They had goal keeper Robert Green to thank though, as he was called upon to save Jermaine DeFoe’s late penalty, his third penalty save this season.
West Ham still have a lengthy list of players who are unavailable due to injury. Dean Ashton may be in line for a starting place following his substitute appearance in the last match. If the striker returns, he will take some of the pressure of Carlton Cole, who has carried the goal scoring burden alone being the only fit senior striker at the club.
Scott Parker is also likely to start the game, like Ashton he made his return from injury as a substitute against Tottenham. Should he start the game, he is likely to line up alongside Mark Noble in midfield to provide some much needed cover for the defence.
