A review of the WWE Draft - A series of (un)fortunate events!
Posted on July 5, 2008
This past Monday night was one of unprecedented mix-ups as one of the biggest drafts in WWE history took place! With the Night of Champions just a handful of days away, the whole landscape of sports entertainment will be changed forever.
This year’s draft was held on the same pattern as the last, with inter brand match-ups to determine who gets a draft pick.
RAW Draw!!
RAW welcomed five new superstars to Monday nights, the very first of the lot being Mr.619 Rey Mysterio! The powerful Batista is also back to Monday nights, sure to start off a string of new rivalries. In perhaps one of the biggest picks of the night, the big red monster, ECW World Champion Kane was transferred to RAW. The other picks were ECW’s CM Punk and SmackDown’s commentator Michael Cole.
SmackDown’s Gain!!
SmackDown also welcomed five new superstars to its ranks. Jeff Hardy, Umaga, Mr. Kennedy and WWE’s most respected commentator Jim Ross (JR) will now be a part of Friday nights. But the most astounding draft came right at the end, with the WWE Champion Triple H now a part of the SmackDown roster. This leaves the brand with two champions, and ECW with none!
ECW..!!
ECW became the most unfortunate brand of this year’s draft, with only one new recruit. The United States champion Matt Hardy will now be a part of the ECW roster, but notably, the brand is left without a champion.
Perhaps the most inexplicable event of the night was in the closing moments of the show, when the RAW ring collapsed and left WWE Chairman Mr. McMahon down and out, immediately after handing out a million dollars of his own money to lucky WWE fans. With the Night of Champions just around the corner, everything looks shaken up…but it’ll definitely be intriguing to watch as all the original match-ups and title contenders remain unchanged! So stay tuned folks…
